Raising Funds with the Raiders

Sometimes its really fun to just do something because it is the right thing to do.

Tonight I’ll be playing a one hour performance to help raise money for the Relay for Life effort. The group sponsoring this evening’s event is the Relay Raiders.

Won’t you join us in Second Life for this great cause? Show starts at 5pm SLT at Haute Couture.

On the Late Show

An SL television show

Last night I was asked to be the musical guest on the Late Show with Angelico Babii. You can find this show at Metaverse-tv.com. It was an interesting experience and I’m glad to have been asked to participate.

The Blarney Stone

What made this most special is that this episode was recorded at the Blarney Stone Irish Bar in Dublin. This is one of my favorite locations in Second Life. I’m always honored and humbled to be asked to perform at this venue. There are so many people from around the world that regularly tune in to the Blarney Stone music streams, even when they are not in-world.

Guests on the show

Ham Rambler, the owner and creator of the Dublin sim, was the featured guest on the program. Also interviewed was Madddyyy Schnook, the author of How to Get a Second Life: Build a Successful Business and Social Network Inworld.

It is my understanding that the show is being edited and should be available at the Metaverse TV web site later in the week. You can also find the show at blip.tv.

Terrible Sore Throat

I have some type of upper respiratory congestion thing happening. It has resulted in a very significant sore throat. The problem is I have four gigs scheduled in the next 32 hours:

Tonight - The Fries Band at Lincoln Park Grille, Kettering OH
Tomorrow -
12:00 SLT - Relay for Life performance
1:30 SLT - Get It Together Launch Party (and thesixtyone.com 100 party)
7:00 SLT - Music Awareness performance at Money Island

I can only hope that something resolves VERY SOON. I sound like Bobby Brady everytime I try to attempt a note.

Sha na na na na na na na Sha na na na na!

Great Open Mic Tonight

Open Mic at Los Arboles

We had another great open mic at Los Arboles tonight. Yxes Delacroix rounded up some fantastic performers, as always. It was good to hear some regular favorites, such as Jackson Oxberger and Joaquin Gustav. We also had the pleasure of hearing two new performers on the Los Arboles stage. Allister Westland and Therese Nightfire both put in a great first-time performance for us.

Tukso Okey was scheduled, but was unable to make it. I filled in the remainder of the set in his place.

Tired of the Tech Issues

As is typical lately, I had plenty of difficulty maneuvering in Second Life this evening. I’ve been discovering that my performances are more often than not hampered by difficulty getting around on stage, maneuvering my avatar into place, and finally actually getting off the stage when the performance is done. Typically I’m finding myself stuck in place while other performers attempt to get their place or I’m flung clear across sims with a simple bump of the arrow key.

This is making for an increasingly frustrating experience. I hate that. I enjoy performing so much. It shouldn’t be hampered by lag issues.

Rich’s Band in Second Life?

Fries Band Drumhead Logo

I have finally convinced the members of my band, The Fries, to make a Second Life appearance. Join us as we simulcast a real-life performance from the Boston Stoker Coffee Shop in Centerville, Ohio. This will take place Friday, 14 March 2008 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Second Life time. (8:30 EST) It will be held at my place, La Desoto Casa Bonita.

The band members will not have avatars during the performance (except for me). However, you may see some cardboard stand up representations.

This simulcast will be dependent on the stability of the wireless connection at the coffee shop. They use the Harborlink setup and it can sometimes be flaky. Cross your fingers and toes and come on by to hear THE FRIES!

Cisco Systems Quantum Shift Music Day

I had a great time performing at the Cisco Systems event today. The event is part of the celebration of events for their Quantum Shift campaign that launches March 4.

This was the lineup of musicians:
Orangelife Holmer, Rich Desoto, Cylindrian Rutabaga, Groucho March, Edward Lowell, Jeff Tully, and Capos Calderwood.

As is often the case, I couldn’t stay for the entire event. I was able to catch Orangelife’s performances, as well as Cylindrian’s. Both were dynamic and extremely great sets of music. It was the first time I had the opportunity to catch Portuguese performer Orangelife. This guy has a great voice and chooses some great tunes to play. His cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” became one of my favorites during this show.

I hope to see regular music events as part of Cisco’s connection in virtual worlds.

Many thanks to Banana Stein and Yxes Delacroix for their participation and coordination of this event.

My performance time for the show at Old Salt’s Pub this coming Sunday will now be 3 p.m. SLT. Ricardo Sprocket (Rich Petko) has a real life schedule conflict, so I accepted his request to trade. So, the lineup for now is:

Old Salt’s Pub Open for One Day!

Some of you may remember the great club known as Old Salt’s Pub. This club had to shut down some time ago. I can tell you that I’ve absolutely missed it. Old Salt’s Pub was owned and operated by CaveCub Milk and Hooper Peel at the Kokomo sim.

Well, some of the “old guard” as it were will be reconvening on a special “re-rez” day of Old Salts Pub on Sunday, 24 February, 2008 from noon to 7 p.m. SLT.

Here’s the lineup of performers:

noon - Snow Gretsky
12:30 - Stalkerwolf Breed
1:00 - Rich Desoto
1:30 - Luigi DiPrima
2:00 - Silas Scarborough
2:30 - Angel Stormwind
3:00 - Ricardo Sprocket
3:30 - Matthew Perreault
4:00 - Maximillion Kleene
4:30 - Kim Seifert
5:00 - Etherian Kamaboko
5:30 - Chronic Skronski
6:00 - Lyndon Heart
6:30 - Dann Numbers*

Many thanks to Kat Vargas for coordinating this event. She has advised us that many of the original hostesses will be on hand throughout the day to help us all relive the spirit of this club and the atmosphere there. Some of these include Kitten Fluffball, Jen Jensen and Evilynda Baphomet.

Kat advises that Haven Colville will be working with CaveCub and Hooper to rez Old Salts on his quad sim. This should give us the opportunity to have 100 or more people attend without major issue!

*(My only regret is that Dann was not able to follow my performance as we used to do in the past. We formed a great bond back then and had some hilarious times heckling and even encouraging each other during our performances.)

Breathing room

Some of you are probably wondering where I’ve been lately (and perhaps some of you haven’t even noticed. Hehehe).

I’ve found it necessary to limit the number of performances in Second Life in order to get some projects done. I’ve been working on my CD for over a year — and have absolutely discovered that my constant time in Second Life was a detriment to getting it finished. So… I’ve been taking some time to update my equipment, software, and instruments, as well as to learn some aspects of recording where I have NEVER focused any attention (midi, for one). It has been refreshing to spend some time working on the craft, so to speak.

However, I will do short runs of performances from time to time. This week I will be doing some shows at Club Wicked, the THON benefit Friday, and of course, Crazy Sharks. Remember, you can find my calendar at my promo site, richdesoto.com.

Also, while I’m thinking of it, don’t forget to visit my profile at thesixtyone.com. If you have a membership (free) there you can help bump the songs up to the front page!

My kids CD on Amazon mp3

I recently learned that my children’s CD “Sing a Song for Safety” is now available on Amazon’s mp3 store.

You can purchase the entire downloadable album for $8.99 or get individual songs for $.99 each (USD). If you have kids in your life that you would like to help educate about fire and life safety this could be the CD for you!
