- Tall Cactus
- Cell Phone
- Oh Mother
- Whiskey Before Breakfast
- Hamlet Chicken Plant Disaster //

Equally at home at a beer joint or concert hall, the Bandits meld old-time, bluegrass, western swing and country with the sounds of string band instruments to create the “North Texas Skunkgrass” sound.

It seemed time to offer something out-of-the-ordinary on Audio Gumshoe. Though this statement itself may a bit ironic. There’s not a typical — or usual — sound for this show. I’ve offered big rock, pop, Americana, trance, metal, blues, outlaw country, rockabilly, latin, world-music, looped acoustic, and even “industrial-tinged alternative folk“. So, why not a bit of “skunkgrass?”

So, I get a submission from Brooks Kendall, Jr. of Flight Music Group telling me about this band out of Denton, Texas called Boxcar Bandits. I don’t listen to bluegrass music, typically, but as soon as I previewed these tracks I was hooked. This is just feel-good music. The fact that these are live tracks gives these selections even more vitality. The ambience of the club, the audience, and the stage conversation lends a feeling of “being there” that makes this a great listen.

Each of the songs on this episode is from the new album “Live from Dan’s Silverleaf” released in November by Boxcar Bandits. When you listen to the full album, you’ll hear the crowd enjoying the music, you’ll hear the band talking to each other, you’ll hear warts-and-all.

…Denton band Boxcar Bandits played their own brand of music they like to call “skungrass.” The band is a revolving door of Denton musicians – including Paul Slavens – and the current lineup is guaranteed to get your boots stomping and your hands clapping.
There's not a typical -- or usual -- sound for this show. I've offered big rock, pop, Americana, trance, metal, blues, outlaw country, rockabilly, latin, world-music, looped acoustic, and even "industrial-tinged alternative folk". So, why not a bit of "skunkgrass?"

So, I get a submission from Brooks Kendall, Jr. of Flight Music Group telling me about this band out of Denton, Texas called Boxcar Bandits. I don't listen to bluegrass music, typically, but as soon as I previewed these tracks I was hooked. This is just feel-good music. The fact that these are live tracks gives these selections even more vitality. The ambience of the club, the audience, and the stage conversation lends a feeling of "being there" that makes this a great listen.

Each of the songs on this episode is from the new album "Live from Dan's Silverleaf" released in November by Boxcar Bandits. When you listen to the full album, you'll hear the crowd enjoying the music, you'll hear the band talking to each other, you'll hear warts-and-all. And that's what makes this a fun collection. Get a copy. If you're in the Denton, Texas area -- or near any of the venues listed on their show calendar -- go hear them live.

Imagine a dinner party hosted by the Beatles, with a guest list that includes XTC, Squeeze, the Zombies and Kinks, Aimee Mann and Elvis Costello. Melodic, hook-driven songs with narrative lyrics. Retro and fresh. Drenched in harmony.

I first played Andy Stone’s music on Audio Gumshoe way back in March 2007. I had found a number of musicians that sounded to me to be “Beatle-esque.” The song “In a Coffee Shop, When” stuck in my head; I found myself humming and repeating the hooks and catchy melody time and again.

Fast-forward to Spring 2011. Andy contacted me to let me know of his new EP “This is It”. I listened to the tracks he submitted to the show and again found myself humming and singing the songs. His tunes are catchy. They nod toward a retro-pop sound, yet sound fresh and new. The production is solid and the lyrics will stick in your head better than most new releases today.

Andy has employed some solid vocalists for his projects. “In a Coffee Shop, When” exhibited the talents of Epic recording artist Danny Malone. I felt, at the time, that there was a true George Harrison quality to his delivery on the EP. Some people might remember Malone from his days as vocalist for Diving for Pearls — or for his work with Elliot Easton (from the Cars).

On the 2010 full-length album “You Don’t See Many of These Nowadays” Stone brought in the talents of some of Chicago’s finest vocalists: Phil Angotti, Mike Przygoda, and Tom Godsman, lead singer/songwriter for the Bethesda, MD based group Accidental Charm. I played the song “Talk About the Love” from this album.

- Time Will Heal
- More Than This

“I really enjoyed your music. You have a great voice and the chord structure of the chorus (Run Away) is very unique… Thank you for letting me listen.” – Jack Douglas – Producer (John Lennon, Aerosmith, New York Dolls, Miles Davis)

Kristian Jackson submitted his music to me after reaching out to Erk at ErkFM and Insomnia Radio: Australia. I couldn’t have been happier. Jackson’s album “Blood Eyes Sunrise” is one of the finest independent productions I’ve heard this year. As a multi-instrumentalist, he brings a wealth of talent to the album, not only as the singer-songwriter, but as a performing artist. Production by Sean Carey (Thirsty Merc) is top notch.

Kristian talks about his music on his site bio:

“There’s no reason why popular music can’t be both interesting and accessible. I’m trying to make music with enough depth to sustain the interest of the most discerning listener while simultaneously capturing the heart of a mass audience.”

If you live in Sydney, Australia, you’ve like already heard him perform. If not, you must find out when he will be on stage. He’s a regular participant on the local music scene; you can find his show schedule at his ReverbNation profile. Be sure to also follow him at all the regular social haunts. The links are included in this post. You can also follow his latest news on his blog.

This would typically be the point where I would wax on about the performer’s skills, their style, or my thoughts on the music. I can’t really do much more than to recommend that you listen to this show — and purchase Kristian Jackson’s album “Blood Eyes Sunrise” using one of the links below. - More Than This
"I really enjoyed your music. You have a great voice and the chord structure of the chorus (Run Away) is very unique... Thank you for letting me listen." - Jack Douglas - Producer (John Lennon, Aerosmith, New York Dolls, Miles Davis)
Kristian Jackson submitted his music to me after reaching out to Erk at ErkFM and Insomnia Radio: Australia. I couldn't have been happier. Jackson's album "Blood Eyes Sunrise" is one of the finest independent productions I've heard this year.

I'm trying to make music with enough depth to sustain the interest of the most discerning listener while simultaneously capturing the heart of a mass audience.”
If you live in Sydney, Australia, you've like already heard him perform. If not, you must find out when he will be on stage. He's a regular participant on the local music scene; you can find his show schedule at his ReverbNation profile. Be sure to also follow him at all the regular social haunts. The links are included in this post. You can also follow his latest news on his blog.

This would typically be the point where I would wax on about the performer's skills, their style, or my thoughts on the music. I can't really do much more than to recommend that you listen to this show -- and purchase Kristian Jackson's album "Blood Eyes Sunrise" using one of the links below. If you enjoy it as much as I, you'll be glad that you did.

Jamie is also releasing a separate single, “’Til Ya Make It,” produced by Grammy and Oscar-nominated producer/songwriter, Jud Friedman (Whitney Houston/James Ingram/Kenny Loggins), the song which led her to form the ‘Til Ya Make It Organization (www.tilyamakeit.com) – a website in development which will advocate charitable causes and provide a forum for her fans to come together and share their own stories about overcoming hardships.

“The Lives of the Monster Dogs is a rock band with a southern drawl. The Monster Dogs took their name from a modern day “Frankenstein” story (but with dogs) by Kirsten Bakis…”

All I can really say about The Lives of the Monster Dogs is, “Wow, this is some great music!” Okay, I can certainly say more, but this is what I thought when I first visited the band’s ReverbNation profile and listened to their tunes. Each tune I heard captured me fully. I often scan through the first few seconds of a band that I’m exploring before moving to the next track. I can guarantee that I listened straight through every song on this group’s profile.

Regarding the reference to Frankenstein above, the band is:

…much like the stitching together of many different parts to make “the monster”, this band’s creation is rock music interwoven with blues, country, and pop. With the “salt of the earth” appeal of Bruce Springsteen and CCR, along with the post “80′s”, introspective and sometimes moody song writing of bands like Radiohead, the Monster Dogs bring to life their own brand of music.

“The Lives of the Monster Dogs” is vocalist/guitarist Melinda Kingsley; Grace Buford on keyboard, guitar and backing vocals; drummer and percussionist Becky Dalke; and KT Bitner on bass.

They are in the studio at the time of this writing finishing the final tracks for theirnew self-titled CD. I can promise you, dear readers and listeners, that I will be moving to purchase this one as soon as it is available. I have long been a fan of one member of the band, Grace Buford. She has put her solo projects aside to concentrate on her involvement with The Lives of the Monster Dogs. I can surely understand why she would want to do so. The combination of talent in the band works. It works well.

Matt Stevens

Songs Played

- 8.19
- Into the Sea
- Lake Man
- Ghost

“A solo album that I can only describe as magnificent. So inspired, anything thus guy touches is genius, from guitar to bass to… mellotron? Oh yes, you know you want this.” Veins Dried Out

“A seriously amazing album, this will f**king move you, seriously SERIOUSLY brilliant! Go and listen to it, I WILL be checking!” Nick Tann Is This Thing On Podcast

“Ghost is a far more mature, multi-faceted release, which sees him finding his true artistic and creative voice, integrating influences more fluidly and satisfactorily and if he maintains this creative purple patch, provides a platform for even greater achievements to come.” Stumpy Bunker

Every now and then an artist does things that I’ve thought, “I should’ve been able to do that!” But… I never did. Matt Stevens has taken the tools available to most guitarists and learned how to make them do what he wants them to do: help make great music. His technique for looping — or live multi-layered performance — has enabled him to provide music for audiences beyond the typical solo acoustic guitar performance.

According to Matt’s web site:

He has composed for short films (including the award winning Daddys Little Helper) and his live work is often compared to watching a one man guitar orchestra or wall of sound.

He has just released his second album Ghost. His well received first album Echo is also available. [links to both are below]

I’ve been a fan of Matt Stevens since I heard tracks from his album Echo. I’m also very impressed with his ability to create a buzz through online opportunities such as Twitter, Facebook and UStream. He performs live on UStream.tv frequently. This has helped him build fans and audiences across the globe.

Stumpy Bunker recently said:

“By using Twitter and Facebook, he has created a buzz about his music both solo and with the amazing ‘Fierce and the Dead’ combo (look out for the astonishing ‘Part 1′ release – www.fierceandthedead.com) , collaborative efforts such as the innovative Cafenoodle, and by clever use of online gigs and public rehearsals via Ustream. Well known for his use of live and recorded looping techniques, Stevens is beginning to widen and improve his creative vision exponentially.”

Every now and then an artist does things that I've thought, "I should've been able to do that!" But... I never did. Matt Stevens has taken the tools available to most guitarists and learned how to make them do what he wants them to do: help make great music. His technique for looping -- or live multi-layered performance -- has enabled him to provide music for audiences beyond the typical solo acoustic guitar performance.

According to Matt's web site:
He has composed for short films (including the award winning Daddys Little Helper) and his live work is often compared to watching a one man guitar orchestra or wall of sound.

He has just released his second album Ghost. His well received first album Echo is also available. [links to both are below]
I've been a fan of Matt Stevens since I heard tracks from his album Echo. I'm also very impressed with his ability to create a buzz through online opportunities such as Twitter, Facebook and UStream. He performs live on UStream.tv frequently. This has helped him build fans and audiences across the globe.

Stumpy Bunker recently said:
"By using Twitter and Facebook, he has created a buzz about his music both solo and with the amazing 'Fierce and the Dead' combo (look out for the astonishing 'Part 1' release - www.fierceandthedead.com) , collaborative efforts such as the innovative Cafenoodle, and by clever use of online gigs and public rehearsals via Ustream. Well known for his use of live and recorded looping techniques, Stevens is beginning to widen and improve his creative vision exponentially."
Pick up a copy of Matt Stevens' album, "Ghost", to get a fully explore his talents. Be sure to visit the links below to learn more about him and to purchase his music.

Dave is a New York City based singer songwriter. He was raised in Puerto Rico and currently performs his mesmerizing version of polyglot Spanish and English rock and reggae songs in clubs around New York City. He has just released his new album of Spanish Rock songs called “Cuentos de la Porta Del Sol (Capitulo Uno); available on iTunes and other online outlets.

I was looking for a sound that I hadn’t played on Audio Gumshoe in awhile. It seemed to me that a latin feel was in order. I started my search this time at Ariel Publicity. Imagine my surprise when I clicked on the very first artist and found that he was, indeed, a latin performer.

What I liked about Dave Sasscer at the first listen was that his music didn’t simply provide latin rhythms — it also provided a natural groove and feel that made the toe tap and the body sway. Whether physically or emotionally, music should move us. Sasscer’s tunes did this for me as soon as I began to explore his songs.

Dave Sasscer’s album “Cuentos de la Porta Del Sol (Capitulo Uno)” reflects his ability to not only share the feel of his birth-land Puerto Rico, but the influences he cites. Dave says he “…learned to write songs by listening to the Beatles and learned to sing by mimicking Bob Marley. Or maybe it was the other way around…” Regardless, he provides listeners with a polyglot of Spanish and English tunes that you can find him performing in venues around the New York City area. The NYC crowd has begun to call his music “rhythmic rock.”

From his bio:

[Dave Sasscer] is joined in the studio and onstage by a roving group of musicians that go by the name the “Mojo Conga Jam”. Regular members of the “MCJ”
include David Patterson on guitar (alumnus of Atlanta Singer/songwriter Shaun Mullins and the Indigo Girls), David Gomez on percussion (internationally acclaimed Latin Jazz percussionist and Hiram Bullock/Omar Hakim collaborator), and various other luminaries of the NYC music scene.

His songs have appeared on television shows, feature films and international DVD releases and have been played on the radio all around the world. He has also worked with such stars at Richie Havens and has pitched songs to internationally acclaimed artists including Norah Jones and Carlos Santana.
