On behalf of the members of Knight Blaze, both recent and past, I want to thank everyone that supported us through the years. We had a great run. We had a great time. We had laughter and tears. Most of all, we feel that we made a difference.
I can’t recall ALL of the schools we played over the years. There were so many. And the kids always seemed to have a blast! We played music for kids so young that it was probably the first time that they’d ever seen a live band play. We played music for teens that enjoyed their own music idols and icons — and yet they were respectful and they danced and sang right along with us. Overall, I’d like to think that we were able to show kids the exact thing that we stressed in our programs: “You can have fun without the use of drugs and alcohol.”
Over the years we saw trends change. We saw music shift in so many directions. We tried to add a few new things to the shows each year that the kids would recognize as popular tunes. And… we played some of the standard “old stuff.” It was always a pleasure to see them light up or even scream with enthusiasm when they’d recognize the first few notes of a song.
This past Wednesday we played our last two sets of music while performing at the annual Sinclair Community College Safety Day. We were able to see some old friends and we were able to enjoy joking with each other while on stage and while setting up and tearing down. We were honored to have our long time friend and sound guy magnifico, Dave Shores, running our sound for us again. And though the cold weather played havoc with our fingers — and some of the notes just weren’t right — we had fun playing the songs that we’ve worked on these many years.
We were able, also, to pay tribute to our great friend and band mate, Jamie Faulkner, whom we recently lost to cancer. Jamie was the kind of person so many of us strive to be. He was caring, positive, spiritual, and strong. He saw the good in people, even when his line of work would show him that people can be cruel, vicious, and mean. He taught us all a lot about compassion.
If you were ever at a Knight Blaze show, thanks for being a part of the history. If you are one of the many kids that heard us play at your school or out in the community, please know that we believed in you and wanted you to be as safe and happy as you could be. We wanted you to know that there are people that cared and that wanted you to move forward in life making choices that would keep you safe and successful. We hope that we helped you to have fun.
