My Album for FREE (Limited Time)

For a very limited time I’m going to make the download of my kids album “Sing a Song for Safety” (high quality 320k mp3) available for FREE!

Sing a Song for Safety album artAll you have to do is visit my Bandcamp page at richpalmer.bandcamp.com. I do ask that you submit your email address to validate the download. I will not sell, tear, spindle, mutilate, slice, dice, mix, mash or make hundreds of julienne fries out of your email address for any other reason than to add you to my notification list. And don’t expect a bunch of spam from me unless I’m singing Monty Python songs. (Spam, spam, spam, spam wonderful spam, wonderful spam.) I don’t like spam email and am pretty sure you don’t like it, either.

And… if you choose to donate anything toward the album, that is great, too. Anything donated will go toward my new album project of pop/rock style songs.

So to recap:

Thanks to P.E.O. Sisterhood

I wish to thank all of the ladies at the P.E.O. Sisterhood at Southminster Church (Centerville, OH) for their wonderful hospitality.

I had the opportunity today to visit the organization to talk about my Safety Songs CD and to play a few songs for them. I talked about the origins of the program and how and why the safety songs project evolved. It was fun reliving some of the memories. It was more fun talking about the classroom visits and showing them how I often teach the programs while using the songs. These ladies were a great audience and a lot of fun to visit. (The lunch was much appreciated, too!)

Many of the ladies purchased copies of my CD to share with grandkids, friends and other family members. I heard mention of a lot of Easter baskets that were going to be filled with Safety Songs!

Visit P.E.O. International to learn more about this great philanthropic organization. They’ve been around since 1869 and their mission is to promote educational opportunities for women.

Videographer a Hero

Catching the action

So often we hear that news camera operators are out to get the “blood and guts” stories. We hear the term “if it bleeds, it leads.” Very often they are on scene to capture the action and get as much of the story as possible through the images that can be shared.

Stepping away from the camera

WDTN photographer Don Hatcher was recently awarded the Urbana Citizen Life Saving Award. He had arrived on the scene of a serious car crash on January 18, 2008. When he arrived, he had the opportunity to catch all the action as it unfolded. However, he realized that a man was in very serious danger. He put down his camera and entered the vehicle to attempt to do everything that he could for the man. Urbana firefighters say that his actions and that of a UPS driver helped to save the life of Denny Howell.

Urbana Daily Citizen report

The Urbana Daily Citizen reported the crash from January 18, 2008. Breanne Parcels wrote:

Hatcher said he was on his way back to work in Springfield from lunch at his home on Woodburn Road when he heard about the crash on the emergency-band scanner in his vehicle.

“I turned around and I knew I would probably beat the medics,” he said. “When I got there I saw a bunch of people milling around and one guy tried to stop me when he saw the camera, but I put it down and said, ‘that guy needs help.’”

Hatcher said he’s no stranger to accident scenes, so he knew what to do to keep Howell stabilized and prevent further internal injuries until an ambulance arrived.

“He was in pretty bad shape,” Hatcher said. “He was choking and I tried to hold him still so he wouldn’t hurt his back until the paramedics were able to suction him, and there was a lot of blood when they inserted the breathing tube. He never did come to.”

Liking TextMarks

I just started using TextMarks. This is a service that I’ve known about for some time, but just didn’t really know how I might use it. Actually, for musicians and others that promote new content from time to time, this is an excellent idea.

I learned of this from Dave Jackson at the Musicians Cooler podcast. He recently mentioned it again on a recent episode, so I thought I’d give it a go.

Here are three of the keywords that I’ve started using:
richpalmer: Yes, this one seems obvious. But the easiest way for me to use this is to have it serve as my virtual business card. If I’m in conversation with someone and find that I’ve forgotten my actual business cards, I can suggest that they text ‘richpalmer’ to 41411 and they will get an SMS message with my contact details.
richdesoto: This is the keyword for people that would like to know when I’m playing again in the Second Life environment. I’ve also placed this widget on my Rich Desoto blog page.
safesongs: Right now it simply points people to my music page for information about the Sing a Song for Safety CD. But I might start using it as a prompt for new information, newsletter updates, etc. Would be a great way to connect with people while on the go.

Here are the three widgets:

Fire Burns Portions of Universal Back Lot

Universal Studios fire

Apparently a fire broke out in the back lot of the Universal Studios properties in Los Angeles yesterday morning. I was out of touch with much of mainstream media throughout the day, so I happened upon the reports this morning.

Some movie sets burned

The Associated Press reports show that the fire destroyed a set from “Back to the Future,” the King Kong exhibit and a video vault containing more than 40,000 videos and reels. Fortunately copies of the movie and television materials are held in other locations, as well.

Rough interview

I feel bad for Los Angeles Fire Department PIO Darryl Jacobs. The MSNBC reporter that was interviewing him during the fire sounded like she had no idea where to go with her questions. She would restate the obvious or rework phrases just to have something to ask. Or, so it seemed.
Here’s a copy of the interview:

A challenging fire to fight

The blaze was believed to be one of the longest-running commercial fires in Los Angeles County history. Fire Captain Mike Brown of the LA County FD has been reported to say, “It is one of the longest fires to extinguish because of its complexity and size.”

Revising the blog, working on the album

Excuse the construction mess

I’m reworking my blog style and themes. For now I’ve not landed on a firm design, so please excuse the mess. I know that first impressions mean a lot, so I appreciate the fact that many of you that are visiting for the first time are only looking for content and not “atmosphere.”

Simplicity and ease of use is the goal

One of the complaints that I’ve received from my recent design is that it sometimes takes too long to load — or that some elements simply are loading sluggishly. I did like the overall appearance of the blog, but didn’t like the fact that the background loaded over the text fields in the initial page refresh. I hope to come up with a design that is pleasant to see, but also quick to appear.

Changes coming to RichPalmer.com

In anticipation of the upcoming CD/album project release I realize that there will be a major revision to the entire structure and appearance at RichPalmer.com. This will likely result in a change to this blog once again — very likely seeing it become better integrated into the overall site.

The current music project is moving forward

I am working on the songs now and hope to have them ready for master very soon. I wish I could give a target date, but the reality of a full-time career and “demands of real life” are ever-present. I work on this project as often as opportunity arises. Thanks for checking in and being interested in the progress!

I can earnestly say that most (if not all) of the songs to be included have been written. Some are already recorded and waiting for the final master process. Others are in production or are in need of some revision. I want the project to seem “cohesive” so there are some changes that need to be made to a few tunes. I think, however, that this project will show some diversity in my style.

Already built first widget

Sprout account active!

Just a few hours ago I mentioned that I would like to have an active account on the Sproutbuilder service beta. As it turns out, I received an invite email from them just minutes after I posted!

First widget built

This is a rough go at my first design, but it is great to be able to put together a simple widget for cross-promotion of my upcoming album. This widget plays three “demo” tracks of songs that will be included. It also offers a feed of my “Music Stuff” category from this blog.

Enjoy! And, while you’re here, would you post and share this widget?

UPDATE:
Here’s a wide version of the widget with slideshow feature added.

Sing a Song for Safety on Amazon mp3

I learned this evening that my children’s CD “Sing a Song for Safety” is now available on Amazon’s mp3 store.

You can purchase the entire downloadable album for $8.99 or get individual songs for $.99 each (USD). If you have kids in your life that you would like to help educate about fire and life safety this could be the CD for you!

Research for New Album

As part of my efforts to determine demand and budget issues for my new album, I’m asking people how they prefer to buy their music. I’ve been doing this in an informal and conversational way to date. Now I would like to formalize the process a bit more.

If you have a few moments, would you please take the “music buying habits” survey that I’ve compiled? It would sure help me as I determine the next step for this next album.

Recording continues and I look forward to announcing pre-orders of the album “Future Retrospect” very soon!
