Back to the Music

I wear a lot of hats. Sometimes literally, but what I mean to say is that I do a lot of things. Music is one of the most important and significant driving factors of my life, but I sometimes find that it gets pushed to the side when other things take “priority.”

I have had a burning desire lately to create more music, yet I’ve not had the opportunity to step aside from the day-to-day grind. Work details, schedules, traveling, side-projects, podcasts, and more have all pushed my creative opportunities to the bottom of the help. I’ve decided is just not acceptable.

I often hear people say that one must “budget time” to do things that are important, such as exercise (which, by the way, I will be reporting on more in the coming months, as well). They say, if you just put it in your schedule you can get 30 to 40 minutes a day of needed exercise to help your body be more healthy. I ask, why not the creative mind, as well? Can I spend a few minutes each day practicing an instrument, writing lyrics, working out chord structures and ideas? Of course I can!

Now, I will admit, it is not always easy to create within a structured environment or time restraint. But, I am going to schedule it regardless. My thought is that it will at least put my mind back into the process of creative thinking. If it doesn’t happen every day, that’s fine. I may find that knowing it is there will cause me to develop new song ideas and to strengthen my desire even beyond the schedule time. And, if it causes my mind to wake me up in the middle of the night to capture that “perfect” lyric or chord progression… so be it.
