A woman wants to install a home fire sprinkler system to help protect her child in the event of a fire. (The child has cerebral palsy.) The local water utility says they will charge her extra tap fees, fees for a commercial meter, and COMMERCIAL monthly water fees. They claim this sprinkler system will generate more water usage.
It will… IF there is a fire. It will use about 340 gallons of water to extinguish a typical room fire. This is water that is METERED. Should the fire department have to extinguish the fire they are going to use over 3800 gallons of water on average. This is UNMETERED or "before the meter."
The utility company isn’t being very logical. If they didn’t charge these rates, perhaps more people would install the systems and we’d have safer homes. They would benefit from supply and demand overall, as well.
